Kati Basti
Kati Basti is a traditional Ayurvedic treatment that focuses on the lower back region, particularly around the lumbar spine. The word kati means “lower back” and basti refers to “holding” or “retaining.” In this therapy, a ring made of black gram dough is placed over the affected area and filled with warm medicated oil, which is kept at a constant temperature for a set duration. The warmth and medicinal properties of the oil penetrate deeply into the tissues, nourishing muscles, ligaments, and joints while relieving stiffness and pain.
This therapy is especially beneficial for conditions like lumbar spondylosis, herniated discs, sciatica, chronic lower back pain, and stiffness due to injury or degeneration. The soothing effect of the warm oil helps reduce inflammation, pacifies aggravated Vata dosha, and improves circulation in the affected region. By directly targeting the source of discomfort, Kati Basti not only alleviates pain but also strengthens the supporting structures of the spine, promoting better flexibility and mobility.
Beyond addressing pain, Kati Basti serves as a preventive and restorative treatment. It is often recommended for people with sedentary lifestyles, those exposed to prolonged sitting or heavy lifting, and individuals experiencing stress-related back tension. Regular sessions help maintain spinal health, delay degeneration, and promote a sense of grounding and balance. As a holistic therapy, Kati Basti not only treats localized back problems but also supports overall vitality and well-being.
